Difference between Tiger stripes and Leopard Spots

Tigers are one of the largest animal to walk on earth; a tiger can reach a weight of 300 Kg others even more. Tigers have typical rusty red coats with white median areas. Stripes are the most distinguishing characteristic of a tiger which may vary from brown to black.

Tigers are territorial and tend to become aloof. A tiger is good at swimming. The tigers in the wild can be found in many different locations spread across Southeast Asia, China and India mainly.

Various types of Tigers can be found in the wild,

Bengal Tiger

The Bengal tiger is found in India as well as Bangladesh and it is known to live both in the heated areas of desert and the grasslands where it is wet and cool.

Siberian Tiger

The siberian tiger is the largest of all tigers. As its name implies, it inhabits the region of siberia in Russia.

Sumatran Tiger

You will find the Sumatran Tiger in the island of Sumatra. The Sumatran Tiger is smaller than other species of tigers.


Malayan Tiger

The Malayan Tiger is only found around the Malayan Pennisula which is where the name comes from

Indochinese Tiger

The Indochinese Tiger is found in areas of Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Cambodia.

South China Tiger

The South China Tiger features a very vibrant color of orange with black stripes on it.

Extinct Tiger Species

The Balinese Tiger became extinct in 1937 and until that time they resided on the Island of Bali. In the 1950’s the Caspian Tiger became extinct.



Tigers have stripes in order to hide in the tall grass when they are hunting. Most animals are color blind and can only see in shades.

Around 1706 recorded tigers are there in India.

 Leopards


The smallest among the four big cats that weighs around 140 pounds is the leopard. They have circular or rosette patterns which appear as spotted. Their fur color depends on the climate that they live in. Leopards have longer body and shorter legs.

Leopards are agile and fast in comparison to tigers. They are found mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, but they also exist in South Asia (India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia).

There are three types of leopards.

Common Leopard are found in Asia and Africa. Snow Leopard live in the middle part of Asia. Clouded Leopard like to live in India and southeast Asia.


In the case of leopards, the alternating dark and light spots,  blends into the shadows and sunlight patches in the grasslands or forest where they live. Making it easier for them to sneak up on the the animals they hunt.

Around 1150 Leopards have been recorded in India.
